ASE Certification is the process by which a motivated mechanic proves his technical knowledge through standardized testing. It is entirely optional whether a mechanic chooses to undergo the rigorous testing process. For our purposes, there are eight (8) automotive/light truck tests of approximately one hour's length each to prove expertise in the following categories, in order from test A1 to A8: engine repair, automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, steering and suspension, brakes, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. Once a mechanic has passed all eight, he is a certified Master Technician. After completing the A8, which focuses on the theoretical operation of engines and the relationship with electrical controls, a mechanic has the option of pursuing more certification in diagnosis called the  Advanced Level Specialist (L1).

At Art's Automotive, nearly all of us are ASE certified (including the office guys), and the majority of us has their Advanced Specialist L1. Some of us have more than the Automotive series of testing, including Alternative Fuels Vehicles, Machinist, and the California Smog Technician license (which requires ASE L1, as well as California State testing). Our mechanics may also have formalized schooling at automotive technical institutes, and many have more years of work experience than I have been alive (I'm 28 at time of writing)!

Until the early 1970s, consumers had no way to distinguish between incompetent and competent mechanics. In response to this need, the independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972.
